Mr. Smith's appearance is described carefully by Verne. This is partly why I love Verne - he so scrupulously describes the character of the hero, his appearance, his habits, his whole being. We already know that Smith has a thick mustache, graying hair, a stern profile, we marveled at his appearance as a scientist with the spirit of a warrior, learned how he was valued in the US government, and realized that he, moreover, is a sensible and wise man, also a daredevil. He accepted all the difficult responsibility that his friends placed on him so easily that the others did not think for a minute (at least in Verne’s story) about the burden he had been carrying all these years. He is a born leader. He is confident in himself and, moreover, what a difference from Captain Grant! - demands more from himself than from others. He asked his friends in advance to find out their abilities and inclinations. Yes, from each according to his ability! And not beyond human strength, like himself! In my opinion, this is a positive hero because in addition to the fact that Mr. Smith is strong in spirit and body, brave, handsome and smart, he is also a very kind person. No wonder children, animals and Captain Nemo are so drawn to him.
