The house of Peter the Great, once just a blacksmith's house, is now famous all over the world; it is also one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands. It was here that the Russian tsar Peter I stopped in 1697, when he came to Zaandam to study ship craft. Here, Peter also planned to study incognito, but word of him has spread throughout the Zaandam quickly, and eight days later he had to leave the city.

Today it’s a bizarre museum, a building within a building: a wooden house converted by a stone canopy.
