Velikiye Luki fortress took its last battle during the Velikiye Luki operation: from November 25, 1942 to January 17, 1943. It was the central place of the destruction of the fascists in our city. Soviet troops stormed the fortress six times, and all the buildings in the fortress were completely destroyed. It was taken on January 16, 1943.

Today people use the fortress as a historical monument, a museum, a place of recreation for citizens, a sport ground, a launch pad for balloons on the days of international meetings of balloonists.
