In the works of Jules Verne, there are several characters who can be considered positive due to their admirable qualities, values, and actions. One such character is Phileas Fogg from the novel "Around the World in Eighty Days."
Phileas Fogg can be regarded as a positive character because of his unwavering determination, intellectual prowess, and his sense of honor and responsibility. Despite being perceived as an eccentric and aloof gentleman, Fogg demonstrates remarkable qualities throughout his journey.
Firstly, Fogg's determination is evident in his decision to travel around the world in such a short time. He meticulously plans his itinerary and faces countless obstacles and challenges along the way. Despite facing adversities, he remains focused on his goal, refusing to give up.
Secondly, Fogg's intelligence and quick thinking are commendable. He possesses a vast knowledge of geography, history, and culture, which assists him in navigating unfamiliar territories. His logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities allow him to overcome hurdles, such as when he saves Aouda from her captors or when he outsmarts the detective Fix.
Additionally, Fogg's honorable nature is evident in his commitment to keeping his word and maintaining his sense of integrity. Even when falsely accused of robbery and pursued by Detective Fix, Fogg remains composed and steadfast, believing in the power of truth and justice. He upholds his responsibilities towards his loyal servant, Passepartout, and treats him with respect and kindness.
Furthermore, throughout his journey, Fogg exhibits a sense of compassion and justice. He rescues Aouda, a damsel in distress, and takes her under his care, showing empathy towards others in need. Fogg's actions demonstrate his noble character and his belief in doing the right thing.
In conclusion, Phileas Fogg can be considered a positive character in Jules Verne's works due to his determination, intellectual abilities, sense of honor, and compassion. Fogg's unwavering commitment to his goal, his problem-solving skills, and his empathetic nature contribute to his portrayal as a protagonist with admirable qualities. Through Fogg, Verne emphasizes the importance of perseverance, knowledge, integrity, and compassion as essential traits of a positive individual.
